Frequently Asked Questions | FAQs

What is a water butt used for?

A water butt collects rainwater from a roof via a downpipe and stores it for later use in the garden. The stored water can be used for watering plants, filling watering cans, washing garden tools or other outdoor cleaning tasks.

How does a water butt connect to a drainpipe?

A rainwater diverter is installed into the downpipe and connects to the water butt using a flexible hose. When it rains, water is redirected from the downpipe into the butt until it reaches capacity.

Are watering cans better than hose pipes for plants?

Watering cans allow more controlled watering directly at the base of plants, helping prevent overwatering and reducing waste. They are especially useful for pots, planters, seedlings and greenhouse plants.

What size watering can should I choose?

Most gardeners choose watering cans between 5 and 10 litres. Smaller cans are easier to carry and control, while larger ones hold more water and reduce the number of refills needed.

Do water butts help save water?

Yes. Collecting rainwater in a water butt reduces the need to use mains water for gardening, helping lower water usage and making garden watering more environmentally friendly.

Should a water butt be raised off the ground?

Raising a water butt on a stand makes it easier to access the tap and allows space to place a watering can underneath. It also helps improve water flow when filling containers.
