What floor coverings work best over underfloor heating?
Highly thermally conductive floors (tiles, stone, polished screed) are ideal. Engineered woods, laminate, and vinyl can work - but thick carpets or high-tog underlays should be avoided as they insulate heat.
How long does it take underfloor heating to heat a room?
UFH warms up more slowly than radiators due to its thermal mass. Expect 30–90 minutes, depending on floor type, insulation, and system. Electric systems heat faster than wet systems.
Do I need a floor sensor or thermostat with UFH?
Yes. A floor sensor helps protect floor coverings from overheating. A thermostat (ideally programmable or smart) controls room temperature and improves efficiency.
What maintenance is required for underfloor heating?
Very little. For wet systems, check pressure, bleed loops if needed, and inspect the manifold and valves. Electric systems usually need no servicing.
