Fall Restraint Harnesses

A fall restraint harness is an essential item of kit if you’re working at height. As part of a fall restraint system, it is designed to prevent you from reaching a high-risk area – it might restrain you from leaning too far over an edge, or from losing your balance by over-reaching.

While a fall arrest system is designed to stop a fall before contact with the ground, a fall restraint system aims to prevent the fall from happening in the first place. Fall restraint harnesses are usually used in combination with a fixed-length lanyard.

Much like with any PPE equipment, you should carry out regular inspections and safety checks on every fall restraint harness. You should also take an accredited training course before use – organisations like IPAF run a range of harness courses covering inspections, awareness and safe use.
