Fall Arrest Harnesses

A fall arrest harness is an essential item of kit if you’re working at height. As part of a fall arrest system, it is designed to protect you in the event of a fall and stop you from reaching the ground – this system is most commonly used when the user needs to be in a potentially high-risk position to carry out the work.

While a fall restraint system is designed to prevent the fall from happening in the first place, a fall arrest system is used to halt or slow a fall before contact with the ground. It should only be used in situations where the restraint option isn’t possible.

Much like with any PPE equipment, you should carry out regular inspections and safety checks on every fall arrest harness. You should also take an accredited training course before use – organisations like IPAF run a range of harness courses covering inspections, awareness and safe use.
