Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Sponge of Sponges This fine product it is the best sponge I have purchased in two years. I needed it because the last sponge i bought got left in a bucket outside two years ago and it went green and horrible with algae and is still lurking in the garden somewhere. I was determined that its replacement would be treated better, kept in useable condition, and that I would get my money’s worth by using it solely for the purpose for which it had been bought. I was determined to seek out the very best of sponges. I considered my prospective purchase in minute detail, and even looked through the product reviews left by previous purchasers. Many of these reviews were of considerable literary merit, and I wanted a sponge that would justify my contributing a review of similar quality to Toolstation’s invaluable modern-day equivalent to the Great Library of Alexandria. I also wanted it suitable for cleaning dirty paintwork. I should stress my choice was not dictated solely by the two points that a) this was Toolstation’s cheapest sponge, and b) that it was cheaper than the cheapest one offered by “The Rival Company That Always Has A Branch Next Door To Toolstation”. I will, however, admit that these two factors were my primary reasons for choosing this particular sponge. The sponge’s first job was to give the lounge walls a “Fussy Forensic Grade Sugar-Soaping”, not merely to remove fingerprints and bloodstains, but to get down to the very DNA of the paint. Those walls had been painted a colour which could only have been chosen by someone who found “Grimy Beige” too cheerful. They had subsequently neglected this paintwork to the point it had acquired a “distressed” appearance…in fact, this particular paint was “distressed” to the point it needed counselling! It was not merely “tacky” in appearance but actually tacky to the touch. Admittedly, that the previous occupant had smoked a pipe, and had bred dogs might also have been aggravating factors contributing to its horrible appearance. “Smoked Dog” is not a pleasant colour to see (or to be), and in order to turn this grimy, smoky shade of dirty, departed and partly-decomposed dogginess into a surface to which Contract Matt White would be prepared to adhere, I knew I needed lots of Sugar Soap, plentiful hot water, and a bold and burly sponge! I need hardly say that this wonderful sponge fitted the bill admirably. It is rectangular and smooth-sided, so is ideal for large flat surfaces. It doesn’t start falling apart in strong Sugar Soap, and its gloriously-intense intense Yellowness clearly indicated when it had absorbed its fill of grime and “Smoked Dog”. It absorbed both solution and suspended grime happily, and (even more happily) released them when squeezed out to restore its Yellowness. Having decontaminated the walls, I gave them a couple of rinsings-down with clean water, again with this amazing sponge. At the end of this task, the sponge was still perfectly rectangular, showed little sign of wear, and was still commendably Yellow. Yellow is the colour that sponges are supposed to be. A Yellow sponge like this probably inspired Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers”. He would probably have cut off his other ear if he had been given a Pale Pink, Pastel Green, or Powder Blue sponge to clean the canvas down before painting those sunflowers. The sunflowers themselves would have looked utterly stupid painted any colour other than Yellow. Yellow is the correct colour for both sunflowers and sponges, and this sponge epitomizes this principle. Had Van Gogh been a Cubist, he would probably have used a Yellow sponge itself as a model I would suggest this sponge meets any reasonable person’s ethical demands too. It is not unduly expensive (which is my definition or “Fair Trade”), and didn’t break up in use, so any contribution it may have made to microplastic pollution down the drains would be negligible. This is a durable, high quality, artfully-artificial and proudly-synthetic product of the chemical industry. Compare the above desirable qualities with those of “Natural sponges” which are marine animals, callously plucked from the bottom of the sea. The conscience squirms, especially as such sponges are also more expensive. Vegetable alternatives like loofahs (the skeleton of a sort of squash from which the flesh has decayed) are unsuitable for decorating purposes (being a silly shape for starters) and rapidly smell revolting if one doesn’t dry them properly after use. For a practical, sturdy, stalwart sponge for decorating work this is ideal. One might use it to wash the car, but I never wash mine, I so refrain for giving an opinion. If one wishes to clutter ones bathtub, a sponge like this is a better alternative to a rubber duck…especially if one loses the rubber duck under the bubbles and then sits on it. A sponge is much safer and a lot less uncomfortable to sit upon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sponge Well what can I say, this has been an exciting purchase for myself, I bought the sponge, intent on using it for absorption tasks (eg spilt building materials, tea) however it seems that every day I am finding a new purpose, yesterday was application of a sealant mixture, Sunday I used it for cleaning purposes. I have also enjoyed sharing my experiences on the products use with my wife Marilyn Pott of an evening, which has provided entertainment and fun for the both of us. I would have no hesitation in recommending this sponge
