An electric sander will smooth and finish surfaces in a fraction of the time it would take you to do it manually. At Toolstation, we know time is money – and our extensive range of big brand sanders will save you both.

Why spend ages scrubbing away with sandpaper when an electric hand sander can do all the hard work for you? Powerful motors combine with efficient sanding motions to deliver smooth and consistent finishes – these specialist power tools are a real time-saver.

Electric Sanders

An electric wood sander is such a versatile tool to own. Use it to prepare surfaces for painting, or for removing old paint or varnish. Strip or prep floors, smooth edges or sand down filler – it’s a real all-rounder.

For many projects, a random orbital sander is often the preferred choice due to its combination of power and performance. It rotates in random ellipse patterns for a smoother finish, and none of the swirl patterns you sometimes get with circular motions.

If you’re working with larger flat surface areas, a belt sander is a great option for material removal. These heavy-duty sanders perform especially well when working against the grain.

Palm Sanders

While orbital models operate with round pads, a palm sander is fitted with a square sheet – it uses a similar circular motion, but often has a smaller motor and a more compact design for working in tighter spaces or closed corners. Palm sanders can also be referred to as 1/4 sheet sanders.

If there’s no power supply nearby, choose a cordless sander for complete freedom to work anywhere. At Toolstation, we stock an extensive sander collection features both corded and cordless options from the trade’s favourite brands like DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita and many more.

FAQs

What is the best sander for skirting boards?

A detail sander is ideal for skirting boards. Their compact size and triangular shape pad makes it easier to sand flat surfaces and reach into corners and edges.

What is the best sander for gloss paint?

A random orbital sander with fine-grit sandpaper is best for preparing gloss paint. It removes imperfections and creates a smooth surface for repainting without leaving noticeable sanding marks.

Can I use a palm sander on wood?

Yes, you can use a palm sander on wood. However, they’re best suited to smaller surface areas due to their lower power output and small sanding pads. If you’re sanding large, flat boards, a random orbital sander would be more efficient.

How long will a sander last?

The life of a sander really depends on how often it’s used. Many models can last many years with regular maintenance. Lifespan depends on usage and how well the tool is cleaned and stored.

Will sanders work in cleanly finished rooms, or do they still make a mess?

Most modern sanders feature dust collection bags or extraction ports to reduce airborne dust. While they are much cleaner than older models, some dust is still produced, so dust sheets and extraction are recommended.

Is electric sander better than hand sanding?

For most jobs, yes. Electric sanders are faster, require less effort, and produce more consistent results, especially on larger surfaces. Hand sanding is still useful for detailed work and tight spaces.

What is the best type of sander for beginners?

A random orbital sander is generally the best option for beginners. It's easy to control, versatile, and less likely to leave sanding marks than other types of power sander.
