What is the difference between a standard and narrow night latch?
A standard night latch lock generally has a backset (the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the keyhole) of 60mm. A narrow night latch has a shorter backset, typically 40mm, making it ideal for paneled doors or doors with glass panes where a standard latch would overlap the framing or glass.
Are night latches as secure as mortice locks?
Standard night latches are excellent for convenient, automatic locking when you pull the door shut, but they are generally less secure than a 5-lever mortice deadlock. For front doors, it is standard practice (and often an insurance requirement) to use a night latch in conjunction with a mortice lock. However, you can upgrade to a British Standard (BS) High-Security Night Latch, which features anti-drill, anti-pick, and anti-bump technology for enhanced standalone security.
How does a deadlocking night latch work?
A deadlocking night latch provides an extra layer of security. Once the door is closed, you can turn the key a full rotation from the outside (or engage the snib on the inside) to "deadlock" the latch. This prevents the latch from being slipped with a card from the outside, and also stops the inside handle from turning - meaning a burglar cannot break a glass pane to reach in and open the door.
