Different classes of fire require different equipment – while one type might be suitable for offices and domestic use, you’ll need a different kind for more specialised industrial or kitchen environments.
There are six types of fire, and using fire protection equipment that isn’t suitable for that class of fire could quickly make the situation even worse. That’s why it’s so important to check you’ve chosen the right firefighting equipment for the emergency.
- Class A fires – combustible materials such as paper or wood
- Class B fires – flammable liquids such as petrol, diesel or paint
- Class C fires – flammable gases such as methane, propane or butane
- Class D fires – burning metals such as lithium, magnesium or potassium
- Electrical fires – electrical equipment
- Class F fires – cooking oils and fats, including chip pan fires
Fire Safety Equipment
It’s essential that your fire safety equipment is compatible with the type of fire you’re facing. For example, an electrical fire must not be tackled with a liquid extinguisher – only CO2 or powder (for below 1000V) are suitable.
Using liquid will also make Class F fires far more dangerous. Wet chemical extinguishers are required here, because they add a layer of foam on the surface of the burning oil or fat – this stops oxygen from fuelling the fire.
