How does a bathroom thumb turn lock work?

On the outside of the door, there is a circular release slot. How do I measure a Euro cylinder thumb turn lock?

To ensure your new thumb turn lock fits perfectly, you need to measure your existing cylinder. Remove the cylinder fixing screw from the edge of the door and slide the cylinder out. Measure from one end of the cylinder to the centre of the rotating cam (the middle screw hole), and then from the centre of the cam to the other end.
