The “Big Switch On” Is Upon Us

Every year we know ‘the ‘Big Switch on’ occurs in households across the nation, when we all reach to flick on the switch of our plumbing, lighting and heating devices in our homes – and the subsequent increase in emergency call outs for our trade customers to fix issues with burst pipes, central heating, lighting and security.

What Do Our Trade Customers Say?

We have surveyed the plumbers, heating engineers and electricians on our customer panel; who can’t emphasise enough the importance of getting our homes prepared for winter, particularly as more of us are spending more time indoors than ever and the clocks going back marking the start of darker nights and the start of the winter.

Our customers advised prevention is key when it comes to households being winter ready – otherwise households across the nation face the risk of a plumbing, heating or electrical crisis during what is already a busy time for trades. The recent survey revealed that 43% of plumbers and heating engineers indicated a sharp increase in call outs to fix broken boilers, leaking central heating pipes and blocked waste pipes with a further 63% mending leaking or broken radiators in autumn and winter.

Survey Findings

38% of the electricians questioned also identified broken electrical heaters as a key reason behind increased call outs, with 31% observing a rise in damaged plug sockets, 27% helping customers with circuit shortages and 67% noticing a dramatic rise in household visits to residents unaware of damaged lighting. All key to keeping households safe during the winter period.

Taking action as early as possible to check electrical, and heating devices and external pipes, guttering and roofing. If there are any issues; get a local trade expert to advise, and fix any potential problems that could arise. Or service and maintain appliances to help to keep your home safe and secure, especially as we’re all spending even more time in our homes currently."
