There are work boots for all kinds of trades and tasks. Many will offer toe and midsole protection to reduce the risk of injury from impacts and increase puncture resistance from hazards underfoot. Others will have specialist features designed for specific work environments.
Safety Boots
All safety boots come with codes to let you know what protection they provide. These safety ratings start with SB for Safety Basic – this means your work boots meet the basic safety standard for footwear, with toe protection against a 200J impact.
From there, safety ratings increase from S1 up to S5 for the highest specifications. S1 safety boots offer anti-static protection, oil resistance and an energy-absorbing heel in addition to the toe cap. As the ratings increase, you’ll find additional protection for the midsole along with resistance to water and more.
Work boots will also have additional abbreviations with their ratings, to identify any specialist safety features. The most common include A (anti-static), P (penetration resistance), WR (water resistance), HRO (outsole resistance to hot contact) and LG (ladder grip).
Steel Toe Cap Boots
Steel toe cap boots are the go-to choice for many trade pros or construction workers. Steel toe caps are incredibly strong and protect feet from drops, punctures, cuts and abrasions. If you’re working in areas that require a non-metallic alternative to steel toe boots, choose safety boots with composite protection – they’re more lightweight and are durable in wet weather because they won’t rust.
Waterproof Work Boots
Working outside all year round? Waterproof work boots are essential for keeping your feet dry as well as safe. Look for the WR and WRU safety codes – this will ensure maximum water resistance.
You may also want to consider these safety wellies if you’re working in muddy conditions or on challenging terrains. These offer waterproof protection for both the feet and lower leg.
