Radiator Paint
Radiator paint is made with a unique formula to give it exceptional heat resistance, often up to 120°C. It’s highly resistant to anything from rust and dust to stains and scratches – if you need paint for radiators, Toolstation has you covered.
You can’t apply any old paint to a radiator – that’s why we stock the very best paint for radiators from specialist brands like Rustins and Plastikote, to make sure you get the job done right.
White Radiator Paint
White radiator paint is the most common colour choice, and its brilliant white finish is formulated not to yellow on hot surfaces. Choose radiator enamel paint with a water-based formula for the easiest low-odour and fast-drying application – it will be touch-dry in as little as 30 minutes.
Radiator Spray Paint
Looking for radiator touch-up paint that’s even easier to apply? Using radiator spray paint is a real time-saver. These aerosol sprays offer a brilliant white finish without you worrying about leaving brush marks on the surface – painting radiators has never been more simple.
Radiator Paint FAQs
Is it better to paint or spray a radiator?
Both paint and spray paint are suitable for painting a radiator. Spray paint however does offer some advantages including being faster and easier to apply, and allowing for a more even finish. In addition to this, with spray paint you won't need to remove your radiator attached to the wall.
Do you have to prep a radiator before painting?
Yes, you should always prep radiator wiith either a metal primer or specialist radiator primer first, this is especially important if your radiator has metal that is exposed or if there are any signs of rusting.
What is the most efficient colour for a radiator?
Matt black is the most effiicent colour for a radiator in terms of heat efficiency. This is because black absorbs all light wavelengths and converts them in heat. However, the difference in heat output between a matt black and white radiator is only around 1%.
Why Use Specialist Radiator Paint?
Radiators expand and contract as they heat up and cool down, which can cause ordinary paint to crack or peel. Radiator paint is designed with heat-resistant properties that allow it to withstand these temperature changes without damaging the finish.
Key benefits of radiator paint include:
- Heat resistance suitable for temperatures up to around 120°C
- Durable coatings that resist chips, scratches and stains
- Protection against rust on exposed metal surfaces
- Smooth decorative finish suitable for visible interior fixtures
Using paint specifically designed for radiators helps maintain both the appearance and durability of the heating system.
When Should Radiator Paint Be Used?
Radiator paint is commonly used when:
- Refreshing older radiators that have discoloured over time
- Protecting new radiators during installation
- Covering small chips or scratches on metal surfaces
- Updating radiator finishes during decorating projects
Because radiator paint is designed for heated surfaces, it provides better performance and longevity compared with general metal paints when applied to central heating radiators.
Can you use normal paint on a radiator?
Standard wall paint is not recommended for radiators as it may crack, peel or discolour when exposed to heat. Radiator paint is specifically designed to tolerate the high temperatures generated by heating systems.
How long does radiator paint take to dry?
Drying times vary by product, but many radiator paints become touch-dry within around 30 minutes to an hour. Full curing may take longer before the radiator is heated again.
Will radiator paint stop rust?
Many radiator paints offer protective coatings that help prevent rust forming on metal surfaces, especially when applied over properly prepared and primed radiators.
