Frequently Asked Questions | FAQs

What is a euro cylinder lock?

A euro cylinder lock is a specific, standardized type of barrel lock widely used on modern uPVC, composite, and timber doors. It features a distinctive oversized keyhole profile and sits inside the door to operate the mortice lock or multi-point locking mechanism. They are incredibly popular because they can be easily replaced or upgraded to anti-snap and anti-bump models without having to change the entire door mechanism.

How to measure a cylinder lock?

To measure a replacement cylinder lock correctly, you need two specific dimensions. Open your door and locate the central retaining screw on the door's edge. Measure from the centre of this screw hole to the outside edge of the door's handle backplate (Measurement A). Then, measure from the centre of the screw hole to the inside edge of the backplate (Measurement B). Combined, these give you your required lock size (for example, 40mm external / 50mm internal).

How to change a door lock cylinder without a key?

Changing a door lock cylinder without a key is challenging because the internal cam (the rotating central piece) naturally rests slightly misaligned to prevent the lock from simply sliding out. If the door is open but the key is lost, the most common method is to carefully drill through the pin tumblers to turn the barrel, or use a specialized lock snapping tool to break the cylinder and remove it. If you are locked out of a closed door, we highly recommend calling a professional locksmith to avoid damaging the door or the internal locking mechanism.
