A jigsaw is a type of reciprocating saw that uses a pull and push motion when cutting. These specialist tools can create curved lines in wood, metal, plastic and ceramic. Jigsaws have downwards-facing blades and are fitted with a jig to guide cutting.

What are Power Jigsaws Used For?

These versatile power saws have a wide range of uses. You can make precise, curved cuts and scrolling lines in various materials, from wood and plastic to sheet metal and tiles. Most models have tool-free blade change mechanisms and varying speed settings for cutting different materials. Power jigsaws are more precise than other reciprocating saws.

FAQs

What features should I look for when choosing a jigsaw?

Key features include variable speed control, orbital action (for faster cuts), bevel-adjustable baseplate (for angled cuts), tool-free blade change, dust-extraction port, and compatibility with T-shank blades.

What types of blades do I need for different materials?

Coarse-tooth blades for fast cuts in softwood/plywood
Fine-tooth or carbide/metal blades for plastic, non-ferrous metals or aluminium
Special blades (e.g., for ceramic) if required.

Ensure your jigsaw tool accepts the blade type before purchase and use.

What’s the difference between a “jig saw” and other saws like circular or reciprocating?

A jigsaw excels at cut-outs, curves and bevels where a circular saw struggles. It’s slower for large straight cuts but far more versatile for detailed work.
