Toolstation work with Youthbuild UK, a charity that aims to help get young people into the construction industry who may be at risk or suffering from social exclusion.
We support their Young Builder of the Year Awards, which takes place in October at the Houses of Parliament, by providing prizes. This year we will be giving both power and hand tool kits to winners and runners up.
The awards celebrate young people who have overcome adversity of some kind to gain employment in construction or who are still in training and working towards qualifications for a future career in this industry.
Past winners have come from many different backgrounds; full time carers for parents, refugees who risked their lives traveling from war torn countries and people who have been directly affected by drug and alcohol abuse are just some examples.
The Young Builder of the Year 2017 was Arben Faulkner of The Electrical Company, London. He overcome a series of personal and family traumas but despite this he completed his apprenticeship and qualified as an electrician. He hopes that his success will inspire other young people to work hard and follow their dreams.
It’s not just about overcoming barriers and adversity however; what they do during their time on site and in training organisations also counts. Attendance, undertaking accredited training in construction, further training or education and securing a job within the profession are all taken into consideration and form part of the judging criteria.
There are two age categories, 18 – 24 geared to those in employment already and 14 – 18 years, for those still in training.
Winners prizes include:
• 18-24 category – up to £1,500 including tools
• 14-18 category – upt o £750 including tools
With prizes for runners up and highly commended.
Judging takes place in August with finalists being invited to the Awards Ceremony at the Houses of Parliament on 17th October 2018.
