An electric boiler is a practical alternative for heating and hot water in properties where gas supply or space is an issue. Electric boilers don’t require combustion fuel, and instead heat water as it passes through an element.

If you don’t have access to a mains gas supply, an electric boiler is another way to effectively heat your home. It won’t require a flue or chimney, which also means it doesn’t need to be placed on an outside wall – this means you can be far more flexible with installation, and make the most of the available space inside the property.

Electric boilers are very quiet when in use, and run efficiently too – they lose very little energy and heat when generating hot water.

Electric Combi Boilers

An electric combi boiler is a great option for properties that are tight on space, because it doesn’t require a separate hot water storage cylinder. This type of boiler heats the water as you use it, so it needs more power than an electric system boiler.

What is an electric boiler?

An electric boiler heats water using electricity instead of gas or oil. It works just like a gas boiler for central heating and hot water, but doesn’t need a flue or gas supply.

Are electric boilers expensive to run?

Electric boilers can cost more to run per unit of energy than gas, because electricity is pricier. But they’re 100% efficient at the point of use as all the electricity you put in turns into heat.

Do electric boilers need servicing?

They don’t need a Gas Safe check, but it’s still worth having an annual service. That means checking the electrics, safety devices, and heating elements to keep it running well. It is recommended that you hire a specialist to inspect your electric boiler to ensure nothing is missed.

Are electric boilers good for small homes or flats?

Yes. They’re compact, quiet, and easy to fit in tight spaces. No flue means there are more options for where you can install them.

Can an electric boiler heat a whole house?

Yes, as long as the boiler is sized right. Small models suit flats or one‑bed homes, while larger units can run heating and hot water for a family house.

What’s the lifespan of an electric boiler?

Typically 10–15 years. Electric boilers tend to have fewer moving parts than gas boilers, so there’s less to wear out, but water quality and regular maintenance make a big difference.

What’s better – gas or electric boilers?

Gas is usually cheaper to run, but electric boilers are easier to install, quieter, and better for homes off the gas grid. Electric boilers are often compatible with solar panels which can lower running costs.
